Giant Sculpture by Children

Amazing Spider-Man #553

Writer: Bob Gale, Artist: Phil Jimenez

I posted about representations of Modern Art in comics before. Here we have a passer-by making the cliche observation that “my four-year old could do that.” Yikes! I would be concerned about the stability of a 30 foot tall sculpture erected by pre-schooler! Especially when it has to be able to sustain Spider-Man swinging around on it. Bob Gale is so campy throughout the whole issue that I suspect the comment is for laughs. Who knows? I don’t want to spoil anything but the whole thing gets destroyed in the end. Perhaps she would have preferred something more representational, like a giant heroic portrait of J. Jonah Jameson.
